There is Only One Face, Performed Installation, University of Missouri, Columbia, 2006
The image above has not been altered. Our faces are offset to convey the function of the mirrorpane.
I installed a sheet of glass into a wall like a window, with one side being mirrored. Through the adjustment of light, at first glance the viewers only see their own image. Unbeknownst to them, I am standing behind the mirrorpane, on the other side of the wall. After a few seconds my ghostlike features from the other side of the wall merge with theirs creating a synthesized image that is neither entirely mine or theirs. They are looking at themselves and at me simultaneously. And I am doing the same. I challenege viewers to ask, "how much do we define ourselves by our faces?" |
